Chapter 26 – ‘I Am Fine, Really’

“Layla? Is something wrong?” Narias asked her.

“I’m so sorry, Narias. I really am,” Layla said quietly, trying to fight her bursting to tears.

“What? Why are you apologizing?” Narias couldn’t understand it.

“I’m sorry, I should’ve… told you yesterday,” Layla said, her voice trembling.

“Wait, I don’t understand. Did something happen?” Narias wanted to know, coming to sit next to her.

“Narias…” Layla let out a deep sigh. “Narias… there is something you should know and…”

“Something I should know? Wait, did something happen to my mom?” Narias asked, becoming worried. “Or is it Milenna? Did something happen toMilenna?”

“No, not… not happened. It’s… sigh… Here, this is the letter for you from your mom,” Layla said, handing him the letter she was hiding in her hands.

“Letter from my mom? Ok,” Narias said, taking the letter from Layla’s hands, feeling puzzled why she hasn’t given it to him sooner before opening to read it.

- “Hello sweetie, how are you doing?” – Were the first words Narias read, with Narias already knowing that’s how all his mother’s letters started. After a few sentences of telling Narias that she herself, his sister Miranda and Milenna were doing fine, Narias read a sentence that made him tilt his head to the side in an unexpected puzzlement. – “Narias, my dear, you are a grown-up man now. You are immeasurably smart and strong, and as heartbreaking as it for me to not be able to tell it to you directly, there is something you need to know. It concerns your father…”

“Huh? Dad?” Narias spoke out loud before continuing to read the letter. However, the moment he read the next sentence, his face went pale and Narias froze in a sitting position like a statue, with only his eyes still moving. He was reading and re-reading the same sentence again and again, and again, visibly not being able to believe what that sentence was saying. “Th… that… that can’t be true. It can’t. Layla, tell me it’s… Layla?”

“I’m really sorry, Narias…” Layla said, smiling, but tears were running down her face uncontrollably. “I’m… really sorry.”

“No…” Narias uttered, his mother’s letter slipping through his fingers and falling down on the floor.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Layla said before hugging him and pulling Narias closer to herself.

“No…” Narias added, gripping onto Layla’s arm before tears started pouring out of his eyes, his face still looking pale and emotionless. “No… daaad…” Narias started crying uncontrollably the next moment, with Layla holding him in her arms. She didn’t say anything. She couldn’t say anything. All she could do was to stay by his side and comfort him just by being there.

{the next morning}

“Hmph… aah…” Narias was waking up. “Huh? Oh… hi, Layla.”

“Hi. How… are feeling, Narias?” Layla asked him carefully, lying next to him.

“I’m… fine…” Narias said that, but it was evident he wasn’t as fine as he tried to sound that he was.

Narias’ face and his eyes were all red from the tears he had shed last night. He couldn’t believe what the letter had said, nor that his father was actually dead.
